Sunset Strip Music Festival – Photos and Review

Words: Mike Pearl Photos: Matt Fisher Saturday was the big day at the Sunset Strip Music Festival, when that troublesome street closure would finally pay off for those of us in the mood for some rock. The auspicious name and location of the festival evoke visions of bedazzled, shirtless lead singers flinging blonde hair across the dingy stages of The Whiskey a Go Go and its ilk. To some degree glam rock lives on at the festival, but Saturday was less a celebration of the Strip’s rock legacy, as an [...]

Sunset Strip Music Festival Tribute to Slash & Red Carpet – Photo Gallery

The Sunset Strip Music Festival kicked off last night at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip with a tribute to Slash! It was a wild night full of music, drinks, Hollywood rock nostalgia and some fun laughs. Slash’s career has continued to grow from his early days performing at the Whisky A Go-Go with Guns N’ Roses to his collaborations with Michael Jackson , Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and directors Quentin Tarantino and Darren Aronofsky. Plain and simple, Salsh is the motha-fuckin man! Check out the photos from [...]

Spiderworks with The Sleeping Sea King at Romano’s – Show Review & Photos

Every city has their hometown heroes. Long Beach has the Cold War Kids, Silver Lake has the Silversun Pickups and the city of Riverside had/has Spiderworks. Most of you probably don’t even know where Riverside is, or snarl when you say the word, but growing up in the IE (Inland Empire) myself, Riverside was just a short 15-20 minute drive from my hometown of Upland, Calif. As I sift through blurred memories of my rather “experimental” days in high school, I have some great memories of taking tokes off the [...]

The Black and White of Sunset Junction’s 30th Anniversary – Photos & Review

Ghostland Observatory Ghostland Observatory! Hellz yeah!  Experiencing an impressive show by these babes always feels electrifying. Since the first time I experienced them a few years ago upstairs at the Ritz in Austin with an audience of maybe 15 people, they have never disappointed. At this year’s 30th anniversary of Sunset Junction I overheard people buzzing about this band all day creating a thick layer of anticipation in the air. The show ran one hour late as they fixed some technical difficulties but as always it was worth the wait.  [...]

Matt Costa at the Mark Taper Foundation Amphitheater – Show Review & Photos

Nevermind the amusing irony that a label called Brushfire Records threw an intimate record preview party in the woods of Coldwater Canyon Park last Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 at the Mark Taper Foundation Amphitheater. Grimy Goods was invited to a gathering of friends, family and colleagues under the trees that gave the perfect setting for a live show anticipating Matt Costa’s new record, “Mobile Chateau.” Due out September 21, 2010, “Mobile Chateau” will be Matt’s third full-length album but the first that he produced alone. Tom Dumont of No Doubt [...]

2010 Outside Lands Day Two – Photos and Review

Words: Sam Tiger Photos: Monique Hernandez Day two of Outside Lands in San Francisco on Sunday, August 15 brought a noticeably different crowd to Golden Gate Park. It’s hard to pin down what exactly a bro-y vibe is, but when you feel it, you know it. It was as if I could read the thoughts of the people next to me, and they were thinking “god I can’t wait to see them play ‘Sex on Fire.’” I tried not to let that alter my outlook for the day, but I [...]

Mimicking Birds at the El Rey Theatre – Photo Gallery

Portland, Oregon trio, the Mimicking Birds played a mellow set last Friday, Aug. 13 opening up for the Wild Beasts at the El Rey Theatre. If you’re into chill music that can come off a bit haunting, you may like the Mimicking Birds. With sweet vocals and lulling arrangements, I guess you can call them a “soothing” listen … Photos: Craig Parker

2010 Outside Lands Day One – Photos and Review

Words: Sam Tiger Photos: Monique Hernandez I spent the majority of the three mile walk through the breathtaking Golden Gate Park in San Francisco talking to Tim, a Buddhist monk who came the first day of Outside Lands on Saturday, August 14 to try and spread the word of Buddha. Normally I would have shrugged off anyone trying to sway my religious interests, but it turned out to be a perfect start to a great day of music and people. It was cloudy and bordered on cold, and that didn’t [...]
