Ambassador Street Skate Plaza

29 09 2008

LA shredders rejoice! You just got yourselves your first (legal) street skate spot!

The Ambassador Street Skate Plaza in Wilmington, CA had its ribbon cut and its cherry popped on Saturday, September 27th. Daewon Song, P. Rod, and some of the DVS team made it out for its inauguration to sign some decks, throw around some swag, and push around a bit. The park looks to be a tight place and a convenient locale. What else could a shred ask for? Grease up dem bearings and git out ‘dere!

Props to Spohn Ranch Skateparks for makin’ the magic happen.

Check out some photos of the event here.

From the Jam Cancells North American Tour

25 09 2008

From the porn industry to the music industry this depression of the millennium is fuckin’ with everything. I can deal with a few inconveniences that quickly drain the weight of my wallet, but don’t fuck with my music. From The Jam was set to go out a North American Tour, although sans Paul Weller, they were comin’ up pretty well. Apparently the recession has dipped it’s grimy hands into them. Check out the band’s statement below:

It is with great regret that we announce that the band’s North American tour has been cancelled.

This is with immediate effect and results from the current economic climate with extra costs across the board making our proposed schedule non-viable.

The band has not taken this decision lightly and everything has been done to try to avoid this course of action. We very much hope to reschedule this tour for next year – any new dates will be announced first here.

With our very best wishes to all,
From The Jam

Nike Kicks out the Homeless

25 09 2008

Looks like the big fat corpo giant that was once just a bulky basketball brand, yet now boasts a shit load of skateboarding, is greedy for more! But this time at the expence of some homeless peeps in Japan. Miyashita Park, a public park in central Tokyo is soon to become (you guessed it) “Nike Park.” You know, I was never a fan of Nike as part of my personal steez, I guess I just correlate it too much with a certain “other” style, but they have done a phenomenal job of jumping on the skateboarding bandwagon and enticing a bunch of idiots to collect their trendy Dunks and what not. Nonetheless, I think the 34 homeless heads in Miyashita park would be pleasantly delighted to view some live skating going on in their very own back yard. Maybe Nike will have a kind heart and let the homeless homies lurk about and chill with the skaters, I’m sure the skaters won’t mind. If anything, I know my friends would probably just shoot the shit with them and smoke some bluntz.

Iggy and the Stooges got a TV EYE on the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame

24 09 2008

Is it lucky number sleven for Iggy and the Stooges? They got passes up the first 6 times, but I gotta feeling the Michiganites will lay down the law of what rock really is and claim “success.” Up against Metallica, Run-D.M.C., Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, War and Bobby Womack, I say to myself, who the fuck are some of these people! It is the Rock n’ Roll hall of fame right? Down for Metallica, down for Run-DMC and down for Jeff Beck, but the Iggy reigns over all, ultimatley. He’s one of the most iconic and influential figures in rock n’ roll, giving root to a variety of genres.

Switchin’ from the swanky Walforf Astoria in New York to the Public Hall in Cleveland, Ohio, the induction ceremony will take place April 4, and tickets to the ceremony will, for the first time, be made available to the public. Some significant changes there sure to stretch today’s weak ass American dollar.

The Stooges were nominated in 1997, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. I’m still amazed that they have yet to be inducted, I guess a few too many on that committee don’t know rock n’ roll.

The Best Female Fronted Bands

23 09 2008

The power of the noni, and I ain’t talkin’ about that acai berry knock off (although it’s pretty damn good), I’m talking about women! There’s some bad ass chicks that just fuckin rock and own the crowd before them. From way back in the 60’s to today’s queens of rock, both men and women alike appreciate the music that these v-cards put out.

So I came by this post on IGN, “7 Female-Fronted Rock Bands That Kick Butt.” Granted they got brownie points for Big Brother and the Holding Company (although they don’t make my top), the band that brought Joplin into the light, along with Blondie and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs,-but other than that, blah: and why 7?

Here’s my top ten female fronted bands that kick ass (in no particular order):

(no solo artists, otherwise Mrs. Smith would be in there)

Jefferson Airplane (when Grace Slick fronted 1966–1974)

Metric

The Sounds

The Kills

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The Distillers

The Runaways

Blondie

Siouxsie and the Banshees

Sahara Hot Nights

Led Zeppelin to Replace Robert Plant?????

23 09 2008

I fuckin love love love Jimmy Page, but it sure ain’t the same with out Plant. So why would anyone go to a Zeppelin show with out either one? Yep, the Led Zeppelin reunion tour rumors are back, in the end I still do think that they will come back to play a few more shows, perhaps all this speculation is just some well drawn out publicity, hypin’ us up.  But you gotta give it to them Brit journalists, they’re just so damn good at starting rumors. They got me! But then again I’m biased to anything Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin tour without Robert Plant? Dave Grohl to replace Plant? Led Zeppelin to now be called the Houses Of The Holy? bahahahaha … read all the shit here.

The Punk Rock Rat Pack

23 09 2008

More goods out of New York: Puttin on the Ritz. If your a fan of the famed Rat Pack, you gotta check this shit it out! It’s raw, funny, jazzy, yet punk. Moonlighting between his day job on John Stuart’s Daily Show, lead singer (if that’s what you call it) put’s on his party suit at night when he fronts Puttin on the Ritz, alongside his band mate Kevin Shea, who also bangs it up in  Talibam!, Great Lakes and Storm And Stress. Wanna hear some comical ruckess in classy attire, give these boys a listen and do it live. They sound as though Sinatra got into Sammy Davis’ fun bag o’ drugs, to the tune of some fucked up big band beats. If you’re lucky they just may have their xtended five-piece line-up (upright bass, trumpet and sax) in attendance.

Stellastarr* Touring the East Coast Yo!

23 09 2008

These indie New York rockers kick ass for many reasons! They haven’t put out a full length since 2005 but now they be gettin’ on the ball. So be prepared to hear that deep unique voice of Shawn Christensen’s so perfectly complemented by the sexy Amanda Tannen, a pretty sweet bassist. Cuttin’ it up in the studio, the band should be putting out a new album next year. But until then check em’ out on their East Coast tour, where they’ll be keeping it real and playing some tight knit venues before they’re 5-day run at Piano’s in their hometown of New York.

Eagles of Death Metal got a “Heart On”

22 09 2008

Fresh from their people:

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL ARE READY TO SHOW OFF THEIR “HEART ON”… NATION WIDE. TICKETS WILL FLY… CROWDS WILL ROAR…EAGLES OF DEATH METAL GOING ON TOUR
Band Set to Release“Heart On” on October 28th via Downtown Records

Currently breaking hearts and bottles in the southwest, Eagles of Death Metal are getting ready to seduce the rest of the country. The band is in the midst of successful, co-headlining tour with The Hives, much to the delight of Texans, Californians, and Arizonians everywhere and to the disappointment of everywhere else-ians. But have no fear, rest of country - new tour dates have appeared! Eagles are ready to strike a city near you like a swift karate slap to the jugular. After unleashing “Heart On” to the masses, the courageous cast of characters will hit the open waters on the first headlining tour for the soaked-in-sexy new album.

The EODM formula for fantastic is humm…let’s see…that’s one part Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes, one part Joshua “Babyduck” Homme. Stirred and served chillllled in a tall glass of class. It goes down smooth every time. Earlier this year, the two captains of the EODM starship left their underground lair 16 kilometers below the earth’s core to lay down a dozen new rumpshaking, rock hard rock tunes. The Dream Duo recorded in Burbank, Los Angeles, Boise, Fargo, and Amsterdam, and were joined by fellow magicians Miss Kat Von D, Brian “B.O.C.” O’Connor, Darlin’ Dave Catching, Alain Johannes, Troy Van Leeuwen, Brody “Queen Bee” Dalle, and Kim “Koko Bubbles” Martinelli.

Look out for the album’s first single “Wanna Be In LA” – a tale that confirms the gospel of Boots Electric and Babyduck… that selling your soul for Rock n Roll is totally worth it. Check out www.eaglesofdeathmetal.com for the latest news and ticket info.

The Libertines Reunite?

22 09 2008

Looks like London’s fashion week brought Pete Doherty and Carl Barat, both formerly of The Libertines, together for a few good tunes. Babyshambles is pretty sweet and Dirty Pretty Things is aight (like I’ve mentioned before) but The Libs were fanfuckintastic! So were they biting their tongues while they played a short acoustic set together? Or was it very amiable? Apparently the pair played “Horror Show,” “Time for Heroes” and Look Back Into the Sun.” I hope this means there’s a Libertines reunion in their future …

Geeky Gamer’s wet Dream

22 09 2008

Tired of going outside? Do you despise the sun? Are you deathly afraid of meeting actual people? Perhaps you’ve given up on the whole  “career” thing? Well if you answered yes to any of the above questions, then this gigantic piece of shit is right up your alley!

Are people really into this garbage? Or have they actually convinced themselves that playing video games on a star trek desk is a productive use of time? I gotta be honest I never had the inner yearning to feel like Dr. Claw from inspector gadget. All right, I lied. There was this one time but there was a garbage truck load of hallucinogenics involved…

Anywho, geeks rejoice! You’ve just found yet another object of affection that will make it even harder for you to get laid. But I guess things could be worse? You could be living in Ma’s back yard instead of that sweet furnished basement…

Now this, is more like it: modern, svelte and stylish.

David Bowie’s Favorite Songs of his Career

18 09 2008

Ever wondered what songs Bowie put out were his favorite? Well the man with two-toned eyes will present his own favorite recordings: “iSELECT:BOWIE”

Earlier this year, David Bowie was asked by a UK newspaper to compile a selection of 12 songs from his own catalog for a limited edition giveaway CD titled iSELECT: BOWIE. Rather than submitting a surface-skimming list of top hits, Bowie delivered an unexpectedly personal, career-spanning selection of recordings he “never seems to tire of,” including two exclusive tracks, with his own insightful notes. Bundled with the June 29, 2008 Mail On Sunday newspaper, the CD was sold out and unavailable by the next day, becoming an out-of-print collectors’ item and stirring worldwide interest. To meet demand for this eclectic and personal collection, Virgin/EMI will commercially release iSELECT: BOWIE on CD and digitally on October 14.

 iSELECT: BOWIE (CD, Digital Album)
  1. Life On Mars? (from the album Hunky Dory)
  2. Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (from the album Diamond Dogs)
  3. The Bewlay Brothers (from the album Hunky Dory)
  4. Lady Grinning Soul (from the album Aladdin Sane)
  5. Win (from the album Young Americans)
  6. Some Are (currently exclusive to this compilation)
  7. Teenage Wildlife (from the album Scary Monsters)
  8. Repetition (from the album Lodger)
  9. Fantastic Voyage (from the album Lodger)
  10. Loving The Alien (from the album Tonight)
  11. Time Will Crawl (MM Remix) (new remix by David Bowie)
  12. Hang On To Yourself [live] (from the album Live Santa Monica '72)

Portland Gets a new Skatepark

18 09 2008

Looks like Maine is fixin’ to get a new skatepark, in their fine city of Portland. Three sweet designs, only one winner: Apparently the city will be designing a Web site where the skaters can vote on their preferred skatepark design. Pretty sweet stuff coming from Maine. Maybe now they’ll have like, 18 skateparks!.

Oh, and Who Skates? will be building the park. Who?

Read more about it here.

Celebrities and Politics

18 09 2008

And now a special political rant from “Hot Kelly”

Dear Celebrities (A-Z list),

When the hell are you all going to learn that talking about your political views has no value to the American public? I know this is probably just another ploy to get attention, since lets face it, the reason most of you are in the entertainment industry is strictly because you crave constant attention and approval. I know there is a small number of you who actually truly love and have a passion for the arts and for that small number, I tilt my hat to you, but lets face it―most of you are just one role away from being on “Dancing with the Stars,” and you enjoy keeping your pie-hole in constant rotation.

Eva Longoria―I love how you say, “Anyone with half a brain is voting for Obama.” Really? Is that the best you could think of? Not, “I am voting for Obama because I like his stance on foreign policy or his tax cuts for 95% of Americans.” Really? I say again, really?

Matt Damon―As much as I loved your skit with Sarah Silverman, you really need to learn to stop for a second and really think about the things that come out of your mouth before all the words spew out into one giant cat shit sandwich. You are concerned if Sarah Palin believes in dinosaurs? Because you are convinced McCain is going to flat line his first term? You discredit Palin because she was a small town mayor and Governor of Alaska for a “measly” two years, even though Obama has been running a political campaign his last two years in the Senate with no executive experience?

Also, I will include the religious right: Obama is not the Anti-Christ. He’s a good man who cares about his country and even if he was the Anti-Christ, wouldn’t that be God’s will?

Now, I am not endorsing anyone here for President and you wanna know why? Because nobody gives a fuck what I think. Americans will vote for whom he or she believes is the best candidate to them. I’m not even saying don’t tell us who you’re voting for because you have every right to say that. I just don’t understand why you celebrities feel that you are all politcal scientists! You’re hurting you’re party more than helping … seriously.

I go to my accountant for financial help, I take my dog to the vet so that he can extract her asshole glands, and I go the movies so that you can entertain me. Is that so much to ask for, that you just take your
10-million dollar contract, act, and then go home to your nice estate in Bel Air? I think the person who said it best was none other than Bob Ritchie (aka Kid Rock):

“I truly believe that people like myself, who are in a position of entertainers in the limelight, should keep their mouth shut on politics. Because at the end of the day, let me tell you what I ‘m good at: I’m good at writing songs and singing. What I’m not educated in is the field of political science. And so for me to be sharing my views and influencing people of who I think they should be voting for … I think would be very irresponsible on my part. So I’ll just keep my mouth shut on that. I think celebrity endorsements hurt politicians. Because as soon as somebody comes out for a politician, especially in Hollywood, when they all go, ‘I’m voting for this guy!’ — I go, ‘That’s not who I’m voting for!’ … As soon as Oprah Winfrey pops up and goes ‘Ha-la-la-la-la,’ I’m like, ‘I love Barrack Obama. I hate Oprah Winfrey.’ I don’t hate her. I just don’t believe in her, so I don’t want any part of any of that. I think celebrities hurt politicians.”

I’m just sayin’ …

― Hot Kelly

etnies is Down for the Kids

17 09 2008

There’s nothing like cute lil babies sporting some sweet baby kicks. I just saw my 7 month old niece last weekend wearing some tiny baby Vans. She rocks, not to mention her name is Olivia, I like to call her, Ollie. It looks like etnies is doing some footwear magic for the tots: Abba you best get on these for lil Ollie!

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (Sept. 03, 200 8) – etnies, one of the leading action sports footwear and apparel brands in the world, is proud to announce the launch of the “Grow with Me” fit system, that will be featured in its etnies Kids line of toddler’s shoes, specifically created with growing feet in mind. After seeing an absence of developmentally sound, proper fitting, affordable, long-lasting footwear in the industry, etnies’ Sole Technology Institute developed a new fit system with a two-step process to give children the best fit possible, and to increase the length of time a child can wear the shoe.

etnies’ new “Grow with Me” fit system includes features that are developmentally proper for the new walker. The first part of the system addresses getting the proper fit; the shoes are constructed on an extra wide last to accommodate the unique shape of children’s feet as they are learning to walk. They feature a molded EVA footbed that helps fill the heel cup and grab and hold tiny heels inside the shoe. All of this is set on top of a super pliable TPR outsole that allows the flexibility needed for children’s feet as they are learning to take their first steps.

As the child’s foot grows and the shoe becomes snugger, consumers can then take advantage of the etnies “Grow with Me” fit system. “Grow with Me” differentiates the etnies Kids toddler collection from other children’s shoes in the length of time the shoe can be worn. The shoes now include an additional 1.5mm EVA insert that can be removed when the shoe becomes too snug on the child’s foot, creating more room and increasing the time a child can wear the shoes. While regular children’s shoes must be thrown out once they’re outgrown, “Grow with Me” can be adjusted to extend the life of the shoe, allowing kids to sport their favorite looks even longer, and reducing the financial strain that parents face when raising a growing child.

The “Grow with Me” fit system will be incorporated into two toddler models: the Toddler Callicut and Toddler Fader of etnies Kids footwear, and will be available in stores in Spring 2009, retailing at $27.

You’ve heard about him in almost every legit rock n’ roll documentary or book. This man is one of the best photographers out there that captured a definitive time in rock n’ roll and punk, allowing us all to understand and admire. Too bad there’s such a few amount of musicians today with that revolutionary lust. New York’s legendary rock photographer Bob Gruen, will launch the first Canadian exhibition of his iconic shots at the Liss Gallery on Toronto’s famed Yorkville Avenue on Thursday Sept. 18. The show, titled “Rockers,” will run through to Thursday October 9. From Bowie, The New York Dolls, Patti Smith, Zeppelin, the Stones and many more, this man has seen and shot it all. The iphone is one crazy fuckin device, with far too many capabilites, it’s almost creepy. Yet another way to waste valuable time: play a sweet skateboarding game on you iphone.

Sweden’s Illusion Labs brings you Touch Grind. The game is unique in which finger gestures are used for control, similar to the motion of the legs and feet on a tangible skateboard. Players can ride as they please and bust out new tricks, with an online editor open to the community, you can even build your own skatepark.

More good things from the extraterrestrials that control Apple and the innovative minds at Illusion Labs. Peep the video below and read all about the goods here.

Kings of Leon - Only by the Night

16 09 2008

I remember my girls and I used to chill with a fun group of guys a few years back in my wild San Diego days. Whenever we chilled with them, it was always a circus. They were unique and quite the tastemakers. I recall them sporting their moustaches and grizzly beards way back when it wasn’t a hipster thing, and listening to all the sickest blues inspired tunes. Traveling to various music festivals with them from The Jazz Fest in New Orleans to the 1st annual Vegoose, everything was an adventure. It was them that turned me onto The Kings of Leon.

Their new album “Only by the Night” drops September 23, but you can have a listen to the entire album on Last FM (which I highly recommend joining). Listening to this album a couple times, I couldn’t help but wonder what my ole group of guy friends thought of their new sound: cause lord knows I think it’s rubbish.

It’s as though they traded in their raw Southern garage rock style for some watered down pop-rock. Reminiscent of 90’s slow rock sensations, it’s the kind of music that your high school color-guard team would listen to as they huddle around in their fatty essence during lunch-time. Looking back at their most famed album Because of the Times, “Charmer” was bad ass! Take it down a few notches and you have “Knocked up” making for some slow coolness, with a focus on some sweet instrumentals. But this new shit, it’s not as gritty and certainly not unique. I think it’s rather poopy, oh excuse me, I meant to say “poppy.” I can honestly say I didn’t like any of their new songs. “Closer” is like some atmospheric R&B and I hate R&B unless it’s coming from the man Marvin Gaye, who’s got a bit of it in his music. But to each their own, they’ll probably gain a larger, broader audience but loose the fans that originally sought them out for that gritty garage rock of the South, with a side of hillbilly twang music they initially put out before far too many “suits” came into the picture.

16 09 2008

He’s basically the most well-known French important in the skateboarding industry, CEO and founder of etnies along with all the other goodies coming from the Sole Tech family. Check out the article the LA Times (Home and Garden) wrote and shot on this cool cat, Pierre. From living in a “Ford Econoline van” to the swanky diggs that Newport Beach has to offer, peep the fine living he’s made for himself here.

And yes ladies, this skateboarding French entrepneur (on right in beanie) is a bachelor …

New York Magazine’s 40th Anniversary

16 09 2008

Check out the good tunes being blasted at New York magazine’s 40th anniversary! For their over-the-hill celebration they have two great bands you’re not gonna wanna miss, so if you’re in the NYC or can make it, I’d check this shit out: The National and Grizzly Bear (if you like Grizzly Bear or TV On The Radio, you probably dig MBAR, check him out here). Besides good music the event is being hosted by comedy group STELLA aka Michael Ian Black, David Wain and Michael Showalter. I hear these dudes are pretty funny and like to flick bogars at their audience, no not really, but they are some good laughs. So get your trippy indie rock on and expect to see far to many hipsters and tryhards! More info here.

Friday, October 10 at 8 PM at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom, 311 West 34th Street.

In Memory of Van Wastell

15 09 2008

His memory lives on. Check out the sweet footy Deluxe has put out of a past Krooked kronicles Premier Tour. As always lots of sick shredding, funny hijinks and of course, the man who’s life is being celebrated, Van Wastell. Good stuff, peep it now!

The Last Shadow Puppets

15 09 2008

Retro, seductive, smooth, melodic, hip, flowy, sensual…. I could conjure up plenty more adjectives to describe for this record but I’ll refrain: The Last Shadow Puppets. For anyone whose familiar with the fantastic foppish foursome The Arctic Monkeys (if you’re not for christ’s sake get the hell outta the cave!), you’ll recognize instantly Alex Turner’s distinctive lead vocals. This is a side venture for him that does break away from AM’s sound but still sounds as if the foundation of the album was built in Monkey land. James Bond would put this on at his after parties. Secret Agent Man music fo realz! So, grab a loved one, some hot trim, or even just your lonesome self and place the needle on their debut album, “The Age of the Understatement”.

Enjoi peoples!

From Motorhead to Mexico

12 09 2008

Well the drunk dirtballs sure came out for this show! Motorhead went off last Wednesday at the House of Blues, San Diego, proving through and through to be one of the best metal bands to grace this wretched world: Lemmy is God. He is one bad ass Brit, tight leggings and all.

I was a lil surprised by the turn out though, I though it would be waaaay more packed, but there was room to actually drink your beer without getting nudged by someone. And might I ad, the cocktails on the upstairs floor were fuckin bangin’! I got so drunk, I thought I was drugged!

And what a way to end the night back at the hotel for some FUN and long road trip to Puerto Penasco Mexico the next morning. G’s por vida

Here’s some shots I got on my phone:

Etnies GvR Goes Digital

12 09 2008

Sole Tech just keeps getting bigger and better, spreading it’s seed through every outlet. The 5th annual etnies GvR (Goofy Vs Regular) has hooked up with EA (Electronic Arts) to make it’s video game debut. I wonder if their infamous after-party will be a part of the game: sex, alcohol and rock n roll!

Read all about it in the press release below!

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Compete for stance supremacy! Black Box, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: ERTS), announced today that it will be partnering with leading global action sports footwear and apparel brand, etnies, to bring their epic Goofy vs. Regular (GvR) skateboarding contest to the videogame world. Gamers will lead a team of goofy foot or regular foot pros as they pit the best skateboarders against each other in the ultimate team competition.

“The Skate franchise has always been committed to showcasing the spirit and soul of skateboard culture” said Executive Producer, Scott Blackwood. “The etnies GvR competition celebrates the fun, creativity and talent in skateboarding today. Featuring the event as one of the main competitions in Skate 2 felt like a natural integration and a perfect fit”

Skate 2 picks up five years after the original Skate, a period marred by an unspeakable disaster that left San Vanelona in ruins. Within that time, Mongocorp rebuilt the city but their zealous protection of private property has put a damper on the once thriving skate population. Equipped with double the bag of tricks, gamers are tasked to rebuild their career and revive the New San Vanelona skate scene. With their ability to get off-board to move objects around and with help from a crew of locals, players will embark on a mission to take back the city, one spot at a time. Along the way, they’ll need to get coverage, earn sponsorships, own challenges and enter contests, including a coveted invite to etnies GvR competition.

“I was stoked when EA committed to putting our etnies Goofy vs. Regular event in their new game! GvR is one the best skate contests of the year and has created some of the most hype and friction over the past 5 years” said Don Brown senior vice president of marketing for Sole Technology and goofy footed skateboarder. “The original Skate was incredibly popular, so we’re really proud to be a part of Skate 2″

etnies will also be partnering with Skate 2 on an exclusive shoe that will hit an etnies preferred retailer in the United States when the game ships in 2009.

Developed by Black Box in Vancouver, British Columbia, Skate 2 ups the ante in delivering an authentic skateboarding experience with all-new tricks that allow gamers to truly skate it their way - on and off the board.

Skate 2 will be released for the PlayStation®3 system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system in early 2009. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Players who cannot wait until 2009, can pick up Skate It for the WiiTM this Fall.
