Mad props to Jake Brown for coming in hot and holding it down in the bronze, showing he is still crazy as ever, slam or no slam. Throwing down a backside no-grab 360 to an 18- feet-eight-inch high mctwist on the quarterpipe with a score of 91.33! I wonder how that wrist is feeling! Check the ESPN Skate blog for more goods.

The man Danny Way got the silver and had a gnarley slam too! Check it below!

X Games Skateboard Big Air Finals

31 07 2008

San Diego is a major hub for skateboarding, no surprise here when almost all the Big Air competitors are reppin’ the whale’s vagina.

Birthday boy Andy Macdonald and young gun Adam Taylor move on from today’s Skateboard Big Air Selection Session to compete in tonight’s finals against four of the world’s top skaters. Last year’s medalists Burnquist, Brown and Gagnon (gold, silver and bronze, respectively) are automatically qualified for tonight’s event.

Danny Way, three-time consecutive Big Air gold medalist (in X Games 10, 11,12), was pre-qualified for the final last year at X Games 13 due to his gold in 2006 but did not compete last year because of a previous injury.

It all goes down at 5:45 p.m. and the shit’s gonna be intense!

The competitors going into the finals are:

Bob Burnquist Sao Paulo, Brazil
Jake Brown Carlsbad, Calif.
Pierre-Luc Gagnon Carlsbad, Calif.
Danny Way San Diego, Calif.
Andy Macdonald San Diego, Calif.
Adam Taylor Cocoa Beach, Fla.

31 07 2008

It just seems like everyone is getting in on the action sports industry big time now! With new corpo partnerships and rich business men now trying to cash in on the scene, especially skateboarding, action sports continues to grow. ESPN is re-branding its online home for action sports. The site will become ESPN Action Sports this fall as part of a new multimedia initiative that will also mark the launch of the ESPN Action Sports Network – a group of interconnected sites, including sport-specific vertical sites from ESPN (ex: ESPN Skate) and other premiere action sports destinations such as Surfline.com, Vans.com, Active Ride Shop and more.

Vista Skatepark to be Demolished

30 07 2008

Just like the untimely demise of the beautiful skatepark at the Maloof Money Cup, another cool skatepark is set to be demolished. The Vista Skatepark, one of the first public skateparks in San Diego, is set to be ruined in August 11. Apparently the city of Vista needs to build a new ($55. 2 million) civic center on the site. They plan on relocating the skatepark, “but it’s going to take a while.” Blah, blah, blah … don’t hold your breath on that one. They probably plan on funding this new civic center with all the tickets they will be giving skaters.  Shred before it’s shredded.

Brimstone Howl

30 07 2008

These crazy kids are nothing but full throttle fun with their 60’s garage, punk inspired tunes. Spawning from Nebraska, where there isn’t much to do, looks like Brimstone Howl focused all their energy into their music to thrash the crowds before them: wild guitars, smashing drums and animated vocals to match.

Yet another awesome band off Alive Natural Sound Records, who’s debut album “Guts of Steel” was also produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Well now these kids are set to release their sophmore album, “We Came in Peace” this coming September 2. The band recruited legendary producer Jim Diamond to man the sound boards with his undenying skills. Check out their new track “A Million Years,” as it pretty much rips. With a U.S. tour this September, you can also catch the boys with the Electric Prunes, August 8 at Mondo Hollywood. The shit’s gonna be good.

P-rod’s Primitive Grand Opening Photos

29 07 2008

Check out Paul Rodriguez’s new steezy boutique, Primitive. Located in Encino, California he hosted a pretty snazzy grand opening party this pas weekend. Besides checkin’ all the limited edition kicks in his new shop, there was also live music, tasty eats and bevies, dj’s, and hot chicks! Check out the photos here.

Black Diamond Heavies

28 07 2008

The Black Diamond Heavies just absolutely rock: straight up! Yet another blues inspired duo, coming from Alive Natural Sound Records, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite indie labels. I covered another band of theirs the Buffalo Killers, back in April, who also rip it up. Conveniently, they both have The Black Keys’ epicly talented, Dan Auerbach, sprinkling some of that “magic potion” over them. Thus creating an electrifying sound.

They have the raw punk of the New York Dolls fused with the gritty sandpaper blues of Tom Waits. Feeling like you’re in a muggy blues joint, the fuzzy guitar chords and vibrant drum rolls induce sudden gyrations through out your body. Needless to say, frontman John Wesley Myers can easily transcend into a sweet, lonesome ballad with “Bidding my time,” similar to the sound of Louis Armstrong. Do yourself a favor and check them out while they’re on tour.

Ed Templeton’s “Deformer”

28 07 2008

Now this book seems like a worthy read! Taking an intense look at the life of skater/artist, Ed Templeton, and his upbringing in suburbia Orange County, California–”Deformer” is the culmination of a vision 11 years in the making, and collects over 30 years of material. Templeton weaves disciplinary letters from his grandfather and religious notes from his mother in with telling images and brutal stories.  In the raw, realistic manner of Larry Clark, Templeton’s personal look at his coming of age should be one set to shock. The goods come in October 2008, but you can pre-order it now!

Nerdcore for Life

28 07 2008

Revenge of the nerds ineed! Check this trailer below to this new documentary called “Nerdcore for Life.” Those geeks you laughed at while passing the halls in highschool, well they be rapping about their life-long struggle now; along with video games, computers and technology. I bet you some of them got a lot of new material gathered at this past weekend’s Comic-Con. Needless to say, at least they ain’t rapping about how many Bentlies or diamonds they own.

Nerdcore por vida holmes!

Emo Outlawed in Russia?

28 07 2008

Wow, I guess it’s illegal to be an emo in Russia. At least it’s better than a full on extermination (yikes). As much as these ridonkulous kids annoy me, I think it’s a bit stupid for Russia to try to pass laws as lame as this one. The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these “dangerous teen trends” encourage depression and suicide. For fuck’s sakes, that’s just as bad as blaming violence and juvenile delinquency on the media. Ever think maybe parent’s with these troubled kids are the ones to blame?

More info here.

THAO & The Get Down Stay Down

25 07 2008

So apparently this chick, Thao, has a knack for  beat-boxing and humming at the same time, in the likes of Rhazel. Besides this quirky gift, she also has a knack for putting out some great tunes. Her poppy blue grass rifts are both full of twang, with a splash of sultry hipness. Listen to her lyrics, they’re pretty funny and at times sad, but you wouldn’t expect that with her skillful strumming and ability to carry an upbeat melody. Currently touring with her band, The Get Down Stay Down (I love that name!), check them out at a venue near you.

Listen to this tune: Bag of Hammers

Transworld Skateboarding’s Nation Wide Premiere of “And Now”

25 07 2008

Check out the dates for Transworld Skateboarding’s 20th video, “And Now!” I guess it was filmed in a short 8 months in some pretty sweet spots through out Australia, China, Spain, South America, California, and many more! Featuring 6 emerging stars: Sean Malto, Richie Jackson, David Gravette, Nick Trapasso, Matt Miller, and Kenny Hoyle, expect some all star shredding set to pave the way for the future.

Check out the premiere dates here.

Lil Wayne Trying to cop the Stones

25 07 2008

Funny: as I’m reading this news release on this rapper Lil Wayne, it reminds me of a couple weekends ago when my friend was making fun of me because I didn’t know who Lil Wayne was. Lil Wayne, Lil John, Lil Mama: really, can any rap artists today be any more original? So I checked his music out, and just as I expected-so not diggin it (it’s actually kinda annoying). They don’t make hip hop like they used to, and until they start doing it again I could care less. Bring back that 90’s shit.

Anywho, Lil Wayne has been sued for allegedly releasing an altered version of a Rolling Stones song without proper permission. Don’t “play with fire” son! More info here.

Paul Westerberg’s 49 Cent Album

25 07 2008

More and more digital downloads are either free or super cheap, thanks to Radio Head and Nine Inch Nails for being so generous with their music, others are now too. The former frontman of the punk outfit The Replacements, has made his new solo album available to all at the kind price of 49 cents! Conveniently enough, the name of the album is 49:00. It’s a single, undivided MP3 file sold via the Westerberg website http://www.paulwesterberg.com, with the technical side being handled by Amazon. With no track list, lyrics or song titles, the mp3 is pretty simple, but don’t underestimate the music. The man plays every instrument on the album and gives a true testament to who Paul Westerberg really is. For 40 cents it ain’t half bad, but don’t expect any fancy studio mixing (cause it sure ain’t): just some down rockin’ homemade music.

More info here.

Greg Lutzka’s Video Shoot Rager!

25 07 2008

Well isn’t this nice … free drinks till the $5,000 bar tab runs out and you get to party with Greg Lutzka. The idea behind this film is to be a party scene for his upcoming video part on the new United by Fate video by Globe. They’re filming a bunch of different skits and it sounds like a ton of fun, but you gotta be 21!

Mondo Hollywood

24 07 2008

All music gets revived: especially blues and 60’s garage of the late. You can hear it in The Black Keys, Jay Reatard, even the back beats in Beck’s new album “Modern Guilt.” With bands like Blue Cheer and The Electric Prunes playing shows once again, many newbies have come into the light fusing the music of the past with their own dirty garage steez of today. Check out Mondo Hollywood, August 9-10 at Crash Mansion LA for some oldies and a whole batch of emerging kick ass bands that will rock your socks off! And yes, it’s taken from the name of the low-budget 1967 documentary “Mondo Hollywood.”  I highly recommend checkin’ this flick as it was banned in France as “a danger to mental health.” Peep the trailer below. And don’t forget to go to the show!

Lots of media buzz going on with Motorhead: from Lemmy’s documentary, to the works on their new album “Motörizer,” and even some Nazi bullshit. Well now the loudest band on earth has set their tour dates and there’s plenty to choose from. You can catch them with Judas Priest, Heaven & Hell and Testament Unite; or with The Misfits, Airbourne, Valient Thorr and Year Long Disaster.

Live Fast Die Young II

24 07 2008

John John Jesse has been a favorite artist of mine for some time now. If you’re not familiar with his work and are into punk rock you need to check it. Even if you’re not into punk, his stuff is pretty gnarly. “Live Fast Die Young II” is lookin’ pretty sweet: Only 30 made and never to be published as a print again. It’s a giclee printed on thick archival rag paper and the image will be a hefty 17 x 21. With a custom certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by John John Jesse himslef, you best act quick, cause these goods will run like hot butter on a pancake!

Order here.

Neff Team is Bangin’

24 07 2008

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of Neff Headwear until a few days ago, but they sure went about branding their name into the skateboard industry the right way. Check out the names on their official skate team: Eric Koston, Guy Mariano, Braydon Szafranski, Terry Kennedy, and recently added Eric Bork as their team manager. Each skater has designed their own signature cap that will be in the upcoming spring line. Check out the goods at the upcoming ASR tradeshow.

The Anatomy of a Hipster

23 07 2008

This shit is just way too funny to not post, and so sadly true. Even though I got a ton of friends that dress in this manner, or more so just bits and pieces of it. ha! Props to Listen Skateboards for apparently coming up with this.

Alphanumeric Fall Launch Party

23 07 2008

It’s good to see Alphanumeric back and bringin’ it hard. I remember them back in the day around 99, sportin’ some of their cute women’s baby T’s. In fact I still got one of them. Anywho, they’ve been coming out with some hot gear, so check it! If your in the San Diego area, join Alphanumeric and UNIV concept shop for a release party of the first full line from A# since their relaunch. It all goes down this Friday, July 25.

The Black Keys Live From Abbey Road!

22 07 2008

If your a lover of music then you probably know a thing or two about the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Classically around since 1931, if walls could talk they’d have an amazing story to tell. From The Beatles to Pink Floyd, many greats laid down their tracks here and now only a select few get invited to do so.

Check out the extraordinary Black Keys this Thursday, July  24 on the Sundance channel (10 p.m.) where they’ll be getting up close and musical.  Peep the interview clip here and the live performance here! As always, expect a stellar performance and a proper interview.

Matix Does AZ

22 07 2008

The Matix team was over in arizona this past weekend doing some skatin’ in the dry heat. Check out some of the footy below from Van Wastell, Mike Anderson, Danny Brady, Tony Karr, and Marty Murawski. Nice lil flick.

“Valley Girl” the Musical

22 07 2008

You either love him or hate him, and I think I fell in love with Nicolas Cage (Randy) the first time I ever saw him in “Valley Girl” while I was barely in elementary school. Such a cutie loner punk he was. Still is to this day, a favorite flick of mine, but I’m not too sure about making it into a musical. MGM is putting into development a musical remake of MGM’s classic 1983 comedy “Valley Girl” as a feature film based on an idea by Idealogy, Inc.’s Sean Bailey and Matt Smith. Utilizing the classic Romeo and Juliet story of the original “Valley Girl”, the update will be a musical set to a re-imagination of classic ’80’s songs.

The original sountrack was great, so let’s hope they stay true to it and keep bringing all the Josie Cotton and most romantically, Modenrn English’s “Melt with you.”

Crack Kills!

22 07 2008

Such a shame that a beautiful woman with such an amazing voice had to go down the dirty cesspool of crackville. Man I used to love Whitney Houston when I was a kid back in the mid 80’s with “I wanna dance with somebody” and “How will I know.” And we can’t forget the flick “The Bodyguard,” and her hit song, “I will always love you.” But after many delays with her new album the past couple years, the tunes have been delayed again. Crack kills! And if it doesn’t kill ya it will damage your vocals. Now taking singing lessons, her album is set to drop in Novemeber, so lets hope she lays off the crizack.

More info here.

Paul Rodriguez’s Primitive Grand Opening

22 07 2008

P-rod coming in hot! First he takes 1st place at the Maloof Money Cup, then 1st at the Dew tour this past weekend in Cleveland, Ohio, and now the man’s got his very own sneaker shop opening up!

“You can go there and find all your limited, hard to find goods. Whether it be Nike, New Balance, we got a little Converse in there, Adidas―it’s a cool skate, street fashion place but more the high end stuff. “

-Paul Rodriguez

So check the flyer above for more details and swing on through! Be sure to pick up the August issue of LUCID Magazine for an exclusive interview with P-rod.

Johnny Rad Fest Photos

20 07 2008

Well, Johnny Rad Fest was pretty damn rad! Props to Tyrone of the Clean Cuts and his buddy Ernie for putting on 4 days of bangin’ music in good ole SD. Can’t beat cool venues like the Tower Bar and The Kensington Club, good shit. The launch ramp BBQ contest was a great way to start Saturday’s festivities, with Shannon and The Clams playing in the Tower, as well as some other band. If anyone knows the name of the first band that played, let me know. I rather liked them! Leading on into the hot mess at the Ken Club the place was packed and all the bands played some great tunes. My favs: The Atoms, Digital Leather (nice short shorts boys) and of course The Spits tore it up like always.

Good night except for the hag that decided to pick on me at a lil after-party. Girls can be soooo lame. I guess confidence and knowledge can be a bit intimidating to those that are insecure (and awkward looking). So what do they do? Hate. Bitch made a fuss about my undergarments. Yeah, I know, how petty. So I had a light pink dress on in which calls for panties that match the color of you skin (you know how it goes girls) so their not noticeable. She calls me out like a trailer park crack head hollering at their kid, “Why don’t you put some panties on you’re not even wearing any!” I was like is this bitch fo realz!? Sure enough I lift a corner of my dress and low and behold, nude colored booty shorts! Continues to be a bitch so I call her out for the “ugly old lady” that she is. Whoa! Here she comes swinging, yep my first chick fight (if that’s what you would call it). I guess when you call a woman in her mid 30’s an old lady and you’re still in your late 20’s rockin’, they come at ya like a bat out of hell! But, no harm was done, face still flawless baish.

In the words of a wise man, “If you’re not getting hated on, you ain’t doing a good job.” Thanks.

All in all, Johnny Rad Fest rocked. Except for the hater at the end. Click here for photos!

Ryan Sheckler on Cover of ESPN Magazine

18 07 2008

“I want to give them more reasons not to like me. Ryan Sheckler

Oh my god! Ryan Sheckler on the cover of ESPN Magazine for the X-games preview! Go figure they’d choose one of the most marketable faces in skateboarding, teen beat heart-throb right?

Ryan is the first legitimate teenage heartthrob in our industry. People who watch him arent skateboarding fans, theyre Ryan Sheckler fans. Vert skater Andy Macdonald

(My thoughts exactly, they aren’t skateboarding fans)

“Personally, I think skateboarding is harder than throwing a basketball in a hoop, so Im all for it growing up and being taken seriously. Ryan is helping do that, and he gets hated on the hardest. Pro street skater Jereme Rogers

Don’t get me wrong, the kid can skate but so can a grip of other skaters, who some are waaaay better, only difference, they aren’t marketed to high school tweens with their pocket heavy parents. Nor do they carry themselves in a manner set to receive ridicule. Just cut the bitching and drama, but I guess that’s OC steez in “The life of Ryan.”

The Streets’ new Album “Everything is Borrowed”

18 07 2008

Before there was Micky Avalon, before there was Dirty Nasty there was another cheeky white boy throwing down some funny hip hop shit. Does “Original Pirate Material” ring a bell?  On a serious note, his beats and rhymes can also be sent with a meaning like that of Atmosphere. Mike Skinner, the British flow master of The Streets is gearing up for completion on his forth coming album “Everything is Borrowed.” The album is due out in the fall.

“I know the title sounds like a Kaiser Chiefs song but I promise it will be better than that. This album started off life as parables but then I realised that it might get a bit cheesy so I got rid of the alien song and the devil song and replaced them with more straight up songs.”

- Mike Skinner

Del Mar Races Opening Day Photos

18 07 2008

Just like Jurassic 5, it was “a day at the races.” Only these were the swanky Del Mar Races in sunny Dan Diego. It was hot and sweaty like a fat plumber’s butt crack but the scenery was a sight to see. From pretty ladies to fucked up outfits, Barnum and Bailey ring masters, and jockey’s the size of Tom Thumb, opening day was far from spectacular, but aight.

Click here for some photos of the scene.
