Dirty Pretty Things “Romance at Short Notice”

30 06 2008

I really loved the Libertines, they were such a fun, hip band with some groovin tunes. Pete Doherty had such a cute yet naughty voice to him, turnin’ on the sound radar of both men and woman alike. Too bad Carl Barât and Doherty can’t hash their shit out and bring The Libertines back. Needless to say, Doherty’s Brainchild, Babyshambles is pretty damn close to the radness of The Libertines. Let’s just hope he can keep his shit together and continue to bring us some rippin’ tunes.

One the other hand, Barât has Dirty Pretty Things. Keepin’ it consistent and on their way to delivering another catchy album, “Romance at Short Notice” is set for a UK release today, June 30 via Vertigo records. The tunes are pretty good, a little too poppy-go-lucky for me, I am however diggin on “Truth begins.” A lil slower but it has a good variety of sound and tempo, with a sexy feel. But, I do prefer the dirty sweet rawness of Babyshambles and perhaps the exciting drama that radiates around Doherty, but to each their own. Listen to the “Romance at Short Notice” in its entirety here on NME.com.

Obama Rolling Stone Cover

27 06 2008

Word up! Barack Obama is gracing the cover of Rolling Stone. The soon to be pres shares his not too shabby musical tastes with us. A fan of the man, Bob Dylan, Obama shares “one of my favorites during the political season is ‘Maggie’s Farm.’ It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric.” Also a fan of “The Boss” and Stevie Wonder, down to Jay-Z and Miles Davis. The man gets mega props for The Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” as one of his favs! Check out what he had to say in this week’s Rolling Stone.

Beck’s New Album “Modern Guilt”

26 06 2008

Beck’s new album “Modern Guilt” sounds pretty dope! The first word that came to mind when I listened to the tracks “Orphans” and “Gamma Ray,” was groovy. They both have a late 60’s steez type of tone.  “Orphans” is real ethereal, with chimes, cymbals and a goodie basket full of some echoing sounds-it just makes you wanna spark up and pass the love. Now if I were a go go dancer in the 60’s, my boots would definitely be twistin’ to the beat of “Gamma Ray.”

I seen Beck perform once, at the first annual Vegoose, and the man is just amazing! Make sure you pick up “Modern Guilt” when it drops July 8 in the US off DGC. But until then stream the mentioned unreleased tracks here. And yes, just like The Black Keys’ sic album “Attack & Release,” “Modern Guilt” too has the Danger Mouse touch.  Without a doubt, the hottest producer of 2008.

Streets Is Talking

25 06 2008

Oh shit, here comes some more crazy ghetto goods and skating from Ian Reid. Wanna check some raw skating mixed in with a bunch of unusual facets of life set to shock? From cracky characters, thug life, glory holes and hoes …. peep the trailer, “Streets is Talking” below. Shit looks wild.

Kings Of Leon Rockin it Again!

25 06 2008

They may wear their pants tighter than than the spandex on Richard Simmons, but these 4 kings of rock n’ roll definitely know what’s up. Bringing more eclectic Southern rock to our ears, the Kings Of Leon are set to impress us once again with their forthcoming album “Only by the Night.” Dropping it’s UK release September 22, us Yanks will get the goods the next day.

With blues and psychedelic rock setting the tone for great rock music today, it’s no surprise the Kings Of Leon plan on revisiting their “southern roots and rock even harder!” But in the mean time, you lucky pissheads in the UK get to see these boys real soon:

“Four Kicks” off “Aha Shake Heartbreak”

Glastonbury Festival (June 27)

Help Johnny Romano Kick Cancer!

24 06 2008

It wasn’t too long ago that we asked all of you to help support lil shredder, Johnny Romano through his battle with cancer. Well this tough kid is still awaiting a bone marrow transplant while receiving chemo everyday. So please show your support and donate some blood and(or) funds. And don’t forget to say hello to the lil guy on the blog Deluxe has set up for him.

Metallica Saves Face!

23 06 2008

Well looks like Metallica felt pretty stupid for throwing a hissy fit about their early reviews across the web. Apparently, the band’s website now includes links to the once-offending reviews. Whether it was Metallica’s bitchin’ about the reviews or the PR/manager’s bad call, the cat’s out the bag. Read all about what The Quietus editor, John Doran had to say about all the drama here.

The Doogood Conservatory Kick off to go Skateboarding Day Photos!

23 06 2008

Well, the event was a success and a fun one at that! Doogood raised about$700 in donations and received some 10 decks and hardware to be sent to the skateparks they work with. Amongst others, a couple of the skateparks that will be benefiting from this event are the first ever to be made in Cairo, Egypt and Boston Bay, Jamaica.

Not to mention the thousands of dollars worth of product that was given away as raffle prizes! Big thanks go out to all the Doogood sponsors that provided some sweet stuff (Blitz, Syndrome Distribution, Black Box, C1RCA, DC, CCS, Active, Sun Diego, Vans, Belly Up Tavern, House of Blues, Maloof Money Cup, Gravity, Stussy, Allyance, Quick Silver, S & A Publishing, Innes, Matt Hensley, Danny Way/Escalera, Jake Brown/Blind, Chad Knight/1031, and I hope I didn’t miss anyone).

Hensley’s was packed and sweaty! Felt like I was at a southern juke joint gettin’ all glistened, only difference was we were listening to some thrashing psychadelic rock. Red Octopus opened up and pumped up the crowd with their echoing rifts. They had it down! When Earthless came on I thought they were gonna blow a whole through the roof with their insane skills! The music was loudly full of energy and as always, they put their audience in complete awe. It was outta this world. And I gotta a hand it to The Clean Cuts for laying down some dope ass tracks. From Question Mark & the Mysterians to the New York Dolls, the 60’s and 70’s were in full effect and the crowd dugg it! These boys know their music!

As for Hensley’s Flying Elephant and their all star staff, they fuckin rocked! As hot and busy as the joint was, everyone got their delicious eats and cold bevies. Kudos to them!

Good times, good times! Doogood’s defintiely stoked on all the wonderful attendees that came to support the cause! You guys rock!

Check out the photo gallery here.

Fujiya & Miyagi Bigger and Better

20 06 2008

I love these smooth Brits who were once a duo, now a trio and soon to be a quadruplet. Fujiya & Miyagi: the more the merrier. According to Filter, a fourth member will soon be added.  The timing couldn’t be more perfect as their album tour supporting their sophomore release, The “Lightbulbs” off Deaf, Dumb and Blind Communications will be released on Sept. 16th.

Just like Ladytron, electronic beats fused with live instruments can make for a solid live performance. Hopefully The Kills will one day get a real drummer as well. Like I said before their drum machine works but there is just so much more pleasure derived from a live drummer.

Currently touring Europe, the boys will be heading towards the US sometime near their album release date. Check out their old track “Collarbone.” It’s the goods and also the score Chris Haslam skates to in the Nintendo Wii “Skate it” teaser.

Skateboarding from Illinois to New York

20 06 2008

In the hot summer weather, with unexepected downpours, two 20-year old film students from Illinois are rollin’ the concrete through America. Traveling 850 miles to New York City all on skateboard this is gonna be one gnarley ride.

Michael Kosciesza and Arthur Swidzinski left June 2 from Millennium Park and have since been riding 400 miles. Currently somewhere in Ohio, the two hope to reach Time Square in about a month. The Columbia College students are accompanied by two friends on bicycles, who are filming the journey for a documentary to be called “Shred America.”

Shit sounds cool. Hope they meet some interesting people along the way to keep the documentary exciting … you know like chicks, drunks, cougars, bums, cops, skater haters. That sort of shit always get laughs and reactions. Good on you boys! Peep the blog here.

Led Zeppelin Tour

19 06 2008

To tour or not to tour, that is the question. The hype about a Led Zeppelin tour is still going on, and probably will be until Robert Plant decideds to bring a “whole lotta love” our way and fullfill the desires of many of us loyal fans with a tour. As stated before, Plant is on tour with Alison Krauss and hopefully will decide to make our Zeppelin dreams a reality in 09. It seems Zeppelin’s legendary guitarist Jimmy Page, is good to go for show time but in regards to Plant coming on board he said, “I’m not going to persuade anyone to do anything. It’s just like the O2, you do it in the spirit of your heart, don’t you? You either do it or you don’t.”

Metallica’s New Album “Death Magnetic”

19 06 2008

I so have a love / hate relationship with Metallica. Love their old shit, loved their performance at the 2006 Download Festival in Donnington, England but I hate their napster drama and I hate their recent blogger drama. Apparently after a listenting party on their new album, Metallica bitched about all the reviews that were written on their album over the net. Which for the most part were all positive reviews. Anyhow, they made everyone remove the reviews. I swear, I’ve never known a band more afraid of the Internet.

On a good note, Metallica has named their new album set for a September release: “Death Magnetic.” Produced by non other than the man, Rick Rubin.

Stacy Peralta’s “Made in America”

18 06 2008

Iconic skater Stacy Peralta has made quite the name for himself with some kick ass documentaries. First with the epic 2001 Sundance Award winning “Dogtown and Z-boys” and then with “Riding Giants.” Well now he’s come out with another great documentary and the shit’s pretty heavy. “Made in America” is about LA Gangs the Crips and Bloods, the last in a trilogy of films about California history and culture. For more info click here.

Peep the teazer below:

Kate Moss Hair Style Faux-pa

18 06 2008

I had to post this shit as I thought it was very funny and I’m a fan of Ms. Moss. You would usually see some ghetto girl loosing her extensions or weave, but not this time. The lovely Kate Moss lost her hair extensions on the red carpet as she returned from the afterparty for her new fragrance ‘Velvet Hour’ at a club in Berlin. Looks like there will be a new hairstylist openeing.

Sex Pistols New Album?

17 06 2008

Never mind the bullocks! Looks like the Sex Pistols will be releasing a new album after a long 31 years. Many iconic punk bands have returned the past years, even with out the powerful influence of some of their members. From the New York Dolls to the Dead Kennedys, they’ve all cut new albums and gone on tour. After tearing it up at Isle Of Wight Festival on Saturday, June 14, the surviving memebers of the Sex Pistols are at it again.

“There could be a new record. That would be nice,” the Sun quoted Lydon as saying.

“But I won’t do anything in a patronising way. The music, the subject and the attitude all have to be right at the same time. Everything has to be from the heart,” he said.

Besides these hopeful quotes, check out the shit talk Johnny Rotten laid down on Cold Play (who I love) and rival 70’s rockers The Stranglers. Shit’s pretty funny and it’s still evident the Rotten just don’t give a fuck.

M.I.A. Retires

17 06 2008

I was wondering why she had canceled her European tour, let alone the interview I had scheduled with her back in May in San Diego … Apparently during her performance at Bonnaroo last Friday (13) she announced three times that this will be her final show! WTF!!! Only two albums deep and she’s already out of the game. “Kala” was such a banger I can’t believe she would quit right there. Well like many musicians that call it quits, they all come back and I’m sure M.I.A. will too. But until then, thanks for the beats and tunes!

More info here.

“This is my last show, and I’m glad I’m spending it with all my hippies,” M.I.A told the crowd at least three times during her high-energy Bonnaroo set. “Thanks for coming to my last gig,” before leaving the stage.”

I lub this crazy SPOT boy! He is my hero, so beware clawing spider monkeys! Check out what he had to say here.

I think she just got off of work from TGI Fridays, nice shirt dumb ass.

Stream Coldplay’s Viva La Vida Free!

11 06 2008

Well it wasn’t too long ago when I talked about Coldplay’s new album “Viva La Vida!” Once again, I don’t care what you say, I love em. However, I’m not that stoked on the new album. But then again when X & Y came first came out I wasn’t too keen on it either, needless to say the more I listened to it, the more I got addicted. The album is pretty good though. They definitely came in with a more eccentric worldly sound, a bit more cultured and that’s hot. listen to “Viva La Vida” (”Death And All His Friends”) in it’s entirety here free to stream before it’s June 17 release.

Working with the amazing Brian Eno, check out what the boys had to say about the influences on their new album here.

New Kids On The Block Is Back!

11 06 2008

So when I got this email, I thought it was a joke. This shit is for reals! I never liked the New kids on the Block growing up, my brothers probably would have kicked my ass. I may have played with Barbies, but they sure weren’t playing to the tune of “The Right Stuff” but maybe doing some naughty deeds with the “Master of Puppets.”

“They might not be ‘kids’ anymore, but the New Kids on the Block are back and just as hot as they were back in the 1980s.” Yeah fuckin right, who done gone lied to you. The only reason why I’d ever go to this show is to write a comedic review. Get yo tickets here!

The Black Keys Interview on Pitchfork TV

5 06 2008

oh god, this may be the best Black Keys interview I’v ever watched. The shit is so funny! Between Pat’s hilarious comments and Dan’s incessant laughs, I could not stop laughing! Thought I was gonna pee in my panties. Not to mention, they poke fun at a super lame band (ICP) which I found quite interesting since a friend and I were just talking about how ridonkulous ICP is, and we both adore The Black Keys. I even put ICP up in the HOT Vs NOT section last week under “Band Tattoos”… Music for nerds and middle America rejects.

As mentioned before, I hate when interviews reiterate what’s already said and known about a band. The best are the oddball as fuck interviews set to make you laugh and get to know your favored musicians.

Click the image below to watch interview on Pitchfork TV.

Music for Aliens

5 06 2008

And no I’m not talking about the illegals coming across the border or in an inter-tube off the Florida coast. I’m talking about the big headed, deep eyed shape shifters that live in the stars above us, or whatevs. But check this shit, it’s pretty crazy. Ten of Sweden’s best artists within electronica were given the assignment of creating music for alien civilizations. The press release reads that these beats are “Unique music that really is not meant for human ears - but for beings in unknown worlds.”

Intro:

Well let’s see what happens because “Music for Alien Civilizations” was released yesterday on earth and outerspace (fo reals yo!). Broadcasted from the space station Esrange in Kiruna, in cooperation with the Swedish Space Corporation. Radio waves will be sent toward a star, which is located no too many light years away from Earth. They hope to receive a music review by 2030 to 2050 … lol

You like it? Well get the free album here.

Mystic Sk8 Cup 2008

5 06 2008

Damn I will never forget the good times and debauchery I had at Mystic Cup back in 06! All those that love the sport should experience this kick ass contest in the beautiful Czech Republic on the lovely but gnarly Stvanice Island. I swear I saw a river rat the size of my head and recall stepping on a huge beatle that painted my foot and flip flop blue. Crazy skating, intense bowl riding, cheap brews, cheap girls and boys, music, rope swinging, oh what fun … Check the flyer below and book a flight out!

Peep this intense bowl riding sesh!

And check out the madness from past Mystic Cups here.

Fallen Footwear “Ride the Sky” Tour Dates

5 06 2008

Well the boys over at Fallen have been doing some major shredding and it’s time to showcase the goods. The tour dates have been set, so cross your fingers your city is on the list. But until then peep the trailer below and check out the B-roll clips here. First stop San Diego of course, can’t wait to see the local homey, Slash’s part.

Peep it:

A.A. Bondy

5 06 2008

Another solo artist I’m totally feelin’ is the sleepy bedroom voice of A. A. Bondy. Much more simple and refined blues than my last featured fav, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, but this southern man’s songs are full of beautiful chords and honest words. His music reads like a story with lots of colors involved, painting visuals that bring his words to life. His LP, “American Hearts” just dropped April 15th off former home of The Black Keys, Fat Possum Records. Ladies, you’ll melt for his voice, men you’ll want to play like him. Cop his previously unreleased free tunes here and enjoy the music.

Among the Pines:

Mogwai Goes Roky Erickson

4 06 2008

First I get word of Sigur Ros coming out with a new album, and now I hear about Mogwai’s newest LP, “The Hawk Is Howling,” due out September 22 in the UK and September 23 in the U.S. on Matador. But check this: psychedelic rock legend Roky Erickson will grace Mogwai with his memorable vocals. With their EP dropping September 8, Erickson will be featured in “Devil Rides”, the final track on the “Batcat EP.” Oh how I can’t wait to get my grimy hands on it and once I do, you best believe I’ll stream it on here for your listening enjoyment.

Roky Circa 1967

A lil Roky for your ears: Cold Night for Alligators

More Stupid emo Protests

4 06 2008

Really, is all this stupid emo bull shit necessary. First the emo protests in Mexico, and now this in England? This is just ridiculous. It’s not like there’s emo slavery or a struggle for emo civil rights that need to be reached. The last time I checked it was 2008, and all though we live in a world of close minded, insecure donkeys, this whole emo scene is just another fad. Ond day when they lay down their flat irons and eyeliner, these kids will look back and say, “Wow, I was pretty fuckin’ lame.”

Well apparently these emos congregated in England’s beautiful Hyde Park to take a stand against all those labeling their chosen genre as a suicide cult. Ironically enough, it was a sunny chipper day, not dark and gloomy. With their main target being the Daily Mail, a British newspaper that attacked the genre in the aftermath of the suicide of Hannah Bond, a fan of the band My Chemical Romance, the emos plan to stick up for themselves and their beloved My Chemical Romance.

All these emo shananigans make me laugh almost as much as their ungodly appearance, but I really loathe when ignorant idiots blame tragic deaths on the media and especially music … always looking for an escape goat for their own shameful failures or disconnection to those who they are supposed love and care for.

But yeah check out some footy below for some laughts: Emo the movie? WTF!

The Black Keys Producing new Music

4 06 2008

So we already know how fuckin amazing The Black Keys are. I don’t know how Dan and Pat find any time to breathe, let alone produce new music for other bands, with their growing tour schedule. But they have lent their musical mastery to a few good bands. Check out the new collabos they have taken part in over at Rolling Stone. My favorite is the Buffalo Killers, who I covered here on the good ole Grimy about a month ago. Their song “Get Together Now Today” ain’t too shabby. It’s got a great sound.

Click here to check the goods.

William Spencer Goes MTV With Hollarado

4 06 2008

No way, MTV coming out with yet another reality series, and a skateboarding one at that. Well, considering it revolves around the life of skater dare-devil, William Spencer, I doubt it will be as shity as The Life of Ryan. According to the press release, it will feature Spencer and “his group of crazy friends who live to make the next stunt crazier than the next. If only they could pay the rent…” With that said, there is some hope for another series to bring us just as many laughs as Rob & Big did.

Check out Spencer’s crazy part in The Denver Shop’s “Hollarado.”

Morrissy’s new Album

4 06 2008

The Moz fires back up with a new album. Going on his ninth studio album, “Years of Refusal” is set for release in September. Naturally, first in the UK on Polydor, followed by the US on Universal. No actual set dates yet, but the album will consist of 12 tracks. There’s also new Morrissey music to be had in the form of “All You Need Is Me,” a single due June 2 in the U.K. The track is one of several new songs that have cropped up in Morrissey’s live shows this year, including “Something Is Squeezing My Skull” and “That’s How People Grow Up.”

Iggy and the Stooges Concert Rider

3 06 2008

Ah, the powerful joys of having a demand list set for the green rooms backstage. While some musicians ask for unusual food requests such as removing all the brown M&M’s from the candy bowls, others I’m sure require the loose attention from a few strippers. Some demands may be quite true, while others just take the piss on concert staff, or check if promoters are doing their jobs reading in between the lines. Well the infamous Iggy and the Stooges take the gold for their concert rider requests. Read the whole thing, the shit is soooo funny!

Some of my favs:

“2 X Heavy Duty Floor Mounted Fans. So I can wear a scarf and pretend to be in a Bon Jovi video. “

“I’d like to say, that the next time the Stooges get booked for their festival, I’m going to turn up with some pickled eggs, a small blue vibrator with a jelly dolphin balanced on the shaft, a set of dog-eared encyclopedias with volume E-G missing, and a screw driver that’s been accidentally dropped in a toilet.”

“We had a lighting designer once, but he went mad so we shot him. Now he’s a light of a different kind, one of God’s little Gobos in Dimmer Heaven.

“But hopefully none of those sandwiches are from Subway with beef and alfalfa sprouts sticking out, like a Florida retiree’s bikini bottoms. Yuk.”
